Permanent make-up is possible through a procedure called micropigmentation, in which an organic pigment is embedded beneath the skin to add permanent color.

At Des Moines Plastic Surgery, we use safe, FDA-approved compounds for applying permanent makeup. There's no downtime after the treatment and most patients are able to resume normal activities within 24 hours.

How Micropigmentation Works

A hand-held device is used to puncture the skin hundreds of times per minute. A very thin needle pushes the pigment into below the epidermis layer of the skin.

The treatment is relatively quick. For example, the upper and lower lash line will only require about 30 to 40 minutes. Mild discomfort during procedure is avoided using topical and/or local anesthesia.

After treatment, you may experience some mild swelling and redness, but your skin returns to normal by the next day.

Can permanent makeup replace all my cosmetics?

Permanent makeup is best for enhancing specific features, not replacing make-up altogether.

When will I see the final results of permanent makeup?

Pigments are individually mixed for customized results, and designed to look natural. You'll see the difference immediately, but it takes about three weeks before you can appreciate the final results.
