What does it mean to be a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?
As the popularity of plastic surgery has increased over the past several years, more and more providers are trying to get involved in the specialty of plastic surgery. The topic of board certification can be challenging to sort through as a patient. A patient who finds that their doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery can be assured that he or she has undergone the proper training in plastic surgery, passed the demanding plastic surgical examination process and continues to practice in a high level of ethical standards.
Dr. David Robbins and Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ are an elite group stowing certification through all four Cosmetic Boards. In fact, very few surgeons in the United States are certified by all four Boards. Dr. Robbins is the only quadruple board certified plastic surgeon in the state of Iowa.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery
The American Board of Plastic Surgery is considered the gold standard for practicing plastic surgeons. Dr. Robbins obtained his certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 2003 and became recertified in 2014 as a requirement for Maintenance of Certification every ten years. Dr. Robbins is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the largest organization of Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in the United States.
The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Established in 1986, the ABFPRS is dedicated to improving the quality of facial plastic surgery available to the public by measuring the qualifications of candidate surgeons against certain rigorous standards.
Although Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ is not limited to facial plastics, Dr. Robbins elected to take this additional specialty board certification in reflection of his interest and volume of surgical cases involving facial plastic surgery. Dr. Robbins has been board certified by the ABFPRS since 2006. In 2015 Dr. Robbins completed recertification by successfully completing a rigorous written and oral examination as part of the Maintenance of Certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Robbins serves as a Diplomat of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Today, the ABCS has become the premier board for examining an elite few of surgeons across the United States in strictly cosmetic surgery, which is unlike any other board. Dr. Robbins chose to become Board Certified by the ABCS in order to show his commitment to education, training, and to exemplify and differentiate his practice of cosmetic surgery from any other in Iowa. Dr. Robbins and Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ have and continue to set the standard for Board Certification and cosmetic surgery in Iowa.
The American Board of Cosmetic Laser Surgery
Dr. Robbins also serves as a Diplomat of the American Board of Cosmetic Laser Surgery. The ABLS is the only medical specialty board worldwide devoted to the use of lasers in surgery and medicine. Dr. Robbins saw the need to become Board certified by the ABLS, and has been at the forefront of Cosmetic Laser Surgery at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ and Coachlight Clinic & Spa here in Iowa.
The American Board of Laser Surgery was founded in 1984 by physicians and other medical practitioners from various fields experienced in the basic science and clinical applications of lasers. They share a concern for the safety and efficacious use of lasers in medicine and surgery. They believe the increasing complexity and utilization of lasers in treating patients has created a need for the establishment of minimum standards of knowledge, competence, and experience for those who use lasers in the health sciences. Dr. Robbins recognized that lasers are sophisticated instruments requiring special knowledge and experience for safe, effective use in surgery and therapy.
No other organization other than the ABLS offers board credentialing in laser science, laser safety and cosmetic procedures in medicine and surgery. Dr. Robbins is currently the only Board Certified Diplomat of the ABLS in the state of Iowa.
