How Does CoolSculpting Work?

Lipolysis describes the metabolization of adipose (fat) cells. Therefore, fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, is the process of lowering the temperature of adipose tissue to the point of controlled cell death so that it can be gradually eliminated by the body.

During a CoolSculpting session, an applicator is used to cause cryolipolysis. Since fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than other types of cells, the surrounding tissue (including the skin, nerves, and muscles) is unaffected. Even still, we will place a gel pad on your skin to ensure your comfort.

Am I A Candidate for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting therapy can be an excellent option for patients at or near a healthy body weight who are struggling to eliminate mild to moderate fat deposits in specific areas of the body. It is not a weight loss treatment. If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, you will need to wait until your family is complete before seeking treatment.

When Will I See the Results?

While some patients will begin to see results within a few weeks, it can take two to four months for the body to metabolize the targeted fat cells. Multiple sessions might be necessary to obtain your desired results, but the effects should stay consistent when paired with a healthy lifestyle.

How Does CoolSculpting Compare to Liposuction?

For more significant body fat removal over larger areas and more dramatic contouring, Dr. Robbins also offers liposuction surgery at Des Moines Plastic Surgery. This technique involves creating a small incision in the treatment area(s), using a cannula to break up the adipose tissue, and then suctioning it out through the cannula.

Liposuction is a surgical, outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. However, not every patient wants or needs this invasive option, as they may only have minor pockets of fat.
