Body Lift Des Moines

Belt Lipectomy

The body changes over time. As we age or lose significant amounts of weight, our skin can begin to lose some of its tone and elasticity. This is especially true for areas like our midsection and buttocks.

If you’re frustrated with loose skin and tissue, a body lift may be the right solution for you. A body lift, or belt lipectomy, is a plastic surgery procedure that can treat these problem areas and reveal a slimmer, more toned physique.

An incision around the body removes an apron of excess skin and fat.

Deep sutures within the tissues help form the new contours.

Dr. Robbins is Iowa’s only quadruple board certified plastic surgeon. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, and the American Board of Laser Surgery. His specialty is cosmetic surgery.

When to Consider Body Lift Surgery

Rather than tackling one issue or one area at a time, Dr. Robbins can perform a body lift which addresses several concerns in a single surgery. You may want to consider a body lift if you:

  • Have a significant amount of loose or excess skin on your abdomen, thighs or buttocks
  • Are at a stable, healthy weight for your body type
  • Possess good health and realistic cosmetic expectations

After losing a significant amount of weight (more than 50% of their total body weight), many men and women elect a body lift to reduce excess skin. A body lift can also be used to address hygiene issues, physical discomfort, embarrassment and other conditions related to the presence of excess skin and tissue.

Dr. Robbins at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, will sit down with you and discuss your goals. During the consultation he will be able to determine if surgery is right for you. Our cosmetic consultations are complimentary. It gives you the opportunity to get all your questions answered, meet Dr. Robbins and feel comfortable with him and our office, and allow Dr. Robbins to exam you and your health history to determine if your goals can be met through cosmetic surgery.

FAQs

  • What happens during a body lift?

At Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, we have a fully accredited operating room right in our office. All your appointments and surgery are in the same convenient location. Body lift surgery requires general anesthesia and the entire process will last between two and five hours. Once you’ve been placed under general anesthesia, Dr. Robbins will begin by making a belt-like incision above your buttocks and upper thighs. Through this incision, Dr. Robbins will be able to reshape, re-position or extract the underlying tissue. Additional incisions made on your lower abdomen and around your navel will be made to tighten and reshape your abdomen.

At the conclusion of surgery, all incisions will be secured with a combination of sutures, skin adhesives and surgical tape. In some cases, liposuction may be performed along with your surgery to address stubborn pockets of excess fat.

  • How long is recovery?

We want to make sure your recovery is safe and comfortable. After surgery, you will wake up in our Recovery Area. Swelling, tenderness and bruising are all common during the first several days of recovery. Dr. Robbins will provide you with a combination of oral pain medication, elastic compression garments and cold compresses to make your recovery more comfortable.

A full recovery will take several weeks to a month, but you should be able to resume work and light physical activity within a couple of weeks. A list of post recovery procedures will be provided to you before you leave the office on the day of surgery. Dr. Robbins will provide you with additional details on recovery expectations during your cosmetic consultation as well.

  • Is body lift surgery safe?

As long as you choose an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Robbins, body lift surgery is extremely safe. Prior to surgery, Dr. Robbins will make sure that you are a good candidate based on important factors such as your medical history, current medications and current health.

  • Is a body lift an alternative to liposuction?

No. A body lift is designed to address significant amounts of excess skin related to natural aging or weight fluctuations/loss. In contrast, liposuction is primarily performed to address small pockets of excess fat. However, body lift surgery and liposuction are frequently performed alongside of one another to enhance the final results of a body lift.

  • Will insurance cover my body lift?

In general, insurance companies are becoming much more selective in their approval process. Occasionally, insurance policies will cover some of the costs related to body lift surgery, but only if the procedure is deemed medically necessary. You will need to contact your insurance carrier for additional details. Dr. Robbins does not accept insurance and is 100% cosmetic. If you are wanting to have insurance cover your procedure, you will need to consult with another provider.

For more than 30 years, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) has been dedicated to excellence in the medical specialty of cosmetic surgery and committed to providing the highest standard of care to our patients.

As the only certifying board that exclusively tests a surgeon’s knowledge and experience in cosmetic surgery, ABCS board certification is reserved for extraordinary surgeons who already possess at least one recognized board certificate, complete a comprehensive AACS certified fellowship training program in cosmetic surgery, and pass rigorous written and oral exams. In reality, many cosmetic or plastic surgeons do not qualify to take the ABCS board exam because of the very strict qualifications they must meet.

Dr. Robbins is Board Certified by the ABCS and has been since 2013.

The American Board of Laser Surgery (ABLS) was founded in 1984 by physicians, physicists and other medical practitioners from various fields who were experienced in the fundamental science and clinical applications of lasers. They shared a concern for the safe and efficacious use of lasers in medicine and surgery. They believed that the increasing complexity and utilization of lasers in treating patients had created a need for the establishment of key standards of knowledge, competence, and experience for those who used lasers in medicine.

Many individual physicians, hospital administrators, chairmen of credentialing committees, and other concerned persons expressed a desire for an organization that would fulfill these needs. In doing so, they recognized that lasers are sophisticated instruments requiring special knowledge and experience for safe and effective use in surgery and other medical procedures.

From the very beginning of the era of lasers in clinical use, iatrogenic, laser-related injuries and deaths were occurring among patients. This was the incentive for the founding of the American Board of Laser Surgery. Today, deaths are rare, but burns, complications and sub-optimal outcomes are still all too common.

The Mission of the ABLS is to educate and credential as many qualified laser and light practitioners as possible to ensure the efficacious and safe outcomes for patients.

Dr. Robbins is certified by the ABLS in Cosmetic Laser Surgery and has been since 2013.

Meeting Dr. David Robbins

This is the customer’s opportunity to ask any and all questions. It is also Dr. Robbins’ opportunity to ask you questions as well. Every conversation should be open and honest because surgery is a big deal and both parties involved want the best outcome with the best experience possible. You should be expected to talk about the following:

What you want to change about your body, and why you want to change it?
How you feel about your body now, and how you would like to feel after plastic surgery?
Your goals: what do you want to look like after surgery, what specific changes would you like to see?
Which procedure(s), if any, can help you achieve your goals?
What results you can expect from each procedure?
What’s involved in the surgery (anesthesia type, incisions, recovery timeframe)?
The risks and possible complications from surgery?
Review your medical history (be open and honest for your safety).

A consultation is equal parts interview, learning experience, and time to see the possibilities of what cosmetic surgery can achieve for you. It’s a two-way conversation that should help you answer important questions:

Is cosmetic surgery the right option for me?
If so, which procedure or procedures are appropriate?
Who do I want to perform my procedure(s)?
Are the benefits worth the risks?
You get these answers by meeting with Dr. Robbins, a board certified plastic surgeon and his staff and asking more detailed questions. Expect each consultation to last from 30 minutes to 1 hour. It is important to remember you are consulting for elective cosmetic surgery, not covered by insurance.

How Is The PRP Hair Restoration Procedure Performed?

A small amount of blood (10mL- about a tablespoon) is drawn in our office just like a routine blood test. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge which will separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from the other blood components which are not utilized. The highly concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the scalp. An additional technique uses Microneedling or a Profractional laser to make microscopic entry points in the skin of the scalp. PRP is then injected into the scalp. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and the patient may drive themselves home. Early studies suggest that the procedure be repeated every three to six months for best results.

PRP in the field of hair restoration is in its early stages and although no long term studies have been performed as it relates to its effectiveness, there is substantial evidence that PRP is a promising treatment option for hair growth. Extensive clinical trials are not complete and medical data is not yet published to establish the absolute effectiveness of PRP therapy in hair restoration. PRP should not be considered a “cure” for hair loss and no guarantee can be made about its individual effectiveness. The kits used to make the PRP are FDA approved. The kits are sterile and isolate the PRP in a very effective way.

How Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) in human blood contains many growth factors that stimulate stem cells which have the ability to stimulate new cell and tissue growth and regeneration as well as tissue healing in the environment or location that the PRP is placed. Multiple medical publications over the past two decades confirm the safety and use of PRP therapy. PRP has been used with great success over the past 20 years in the fields of plastic surgery, reconstructive and wound healing treatments, oral surgery, neurosurgery, and orthopedics.

PRP as it relates to hair growth is an exciting new non-surgical option for patients who may benefit from stimulation of hair growth and preventing further loss. PRP hair restoration does not re-grow hair but uses your own blood products to increase hair thickness and stimulates existing hair follicles to grow and is best applied to small areas of thinning hair, receding hairlines, and loss of hair volume. PRP is not meant to replace FDA approved medications to prevent hair loss but may be used in addition to these medications or may be an option for those who wish to not take medications or have side effects from these medications. PRP will complement the effects of minoxidil and DHT blockers. PRP hair restoration is also a great option for those who are not candidates for surgery or who want to delay formal hair transplant surgery. PRP can also be used after Neograft hair transplant to improve graft survival and speed of growth as well as to help prevent ongoing hair loss.
