When to Consider Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can be customized to address your specific areas of concern. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have bags and puffiness around your eyes
  • Have loose skin, wrinkles or fine lines around your eyes
  • Have discoloration or dark circles under your eyes

Eyelid surgery is ideal for patients with eyes that appear chronically sad, tired or fatigued. As a general rule, the best candidates are in good health and possess realistic expectations. Though most of our patients are 35 years of age or older, surgery can be performed on adults of all ages. The best way to find out if surgery is right for you is to schedule a cosmetic consultation with Dr. David Robbins. During your cosmetic consultation you will be able to ask questions, feel comfortable with Dr. Robbins and his staff and talk about your goals for facial rejuvenation.

FAQs

  • What happens during eyelid surgery?

At Des Moines Plastic Surgery™, your surgery and all your appointments are conveniently located at our office in West Des Moines, Iowa. We have a fully accredited operating room located at our office which provides privacy and continuity of care. Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure that requires general anesthesia or intravenous sedation or in some circumstances, local anesthesia alone. Dr. Robbins will make precise incisions just below your lower lashes (for lower eyelid surgery) and/or in the natural folds of your upper lids (for upper eyelid surgery).

Through these incisions, Dr. Robbins will be able to remove excess skin and fat. Following surgery, all incisions will be secured with small sutures for minimal scarring.

  • Will I need to take time off from work?

Yes. The time necessary for your recovery will ultimately depend on your body’s natural healing abilities, but most patients feel comfortable resuming work and light physical activities within 10 days. When creating a schedule for your time off from work, it’s important to note that noticeable swelling and bruising may persist for 1 to 2 weeks.

  • What is the recovery like after eyelid surgery?

It’s normal to experience some soreness and tightness around your eyes for the first few days. This discomfort can be controlled using a combination of prescription pain medication and cold compresses.

Incisions made during upper and lower eyelid surgery are concealed within the natural contours of your eyelids. Some scarring may be visible following surgery, but this will gradually fade and flatten over the course of a few months.

  • What are the risks of eyelid surgery?

Like all surgical procedures, eyelid surgery does carry risks. We will discuss these risks with you in our office during your consultation and/or pre-op appointment. Some risks may include adverse reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, infection, asymmetry or undesirable results.

How Is The PRP Hair Restoration Procedure Performed?

A small amount of blood (10mL- about a tablespoon) is drawn in our office just like a routine blood test. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge which will separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from the other blood components which are not utilized. The highly concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the scalp. An additional technique uses Microneedling or a Profractional laser to make microscopic entry points in the skin of the scalp. PRP is then injected into the scalp. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and the patient may drive themselves home. Early studies suggest that the procedure be repeated every three to six months for best results.

PRP in the field of hair restoration is in its early stages and although no long term studies have been performed as it relates to its effectiveness, there is substantial evidence that PRP is a promising treatment option for hair growth. Extensive clinical trials are not complete and medical data is not yet published to establish the absolute effectiveness of PRP therapy in hair restoration. PRP should not be considered a “cure” for hair loss and no guarantee can be made about its individual effectiveness. The kits used to make the PRP are FDA approved. The kits are sterile and isolate the PRP in a very effective way.

How Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) in human blood contains many growth factors that stimulate stem cells which have the ability to stimulate new cell and tissue growth and regeneration as well as tissue healing in the environment or location that the PRP is placed. Multiple medical publications over the past two decades confirm the safety and use of PRP therapy. PRP has been used with great success over the past 20 years in the fields of plastic surgery, reconstructive and wound healing treatments, oral surgery, neurosurgery, and orthopedics.

PRP as it relates to hair growth is an exciting new non-surgical option for patients who may benefit from stimulation of hair growth and preventing further loss. PRP hair restoration does not re-grow hair but uses your own blood products to increase hair thickness and stimulates existing hair follicles to grow and is best applied to small areas of thinning hair, receding hairlines, and loss of hair volume. PRP is not meant to replace FDA approved medications to prevent hair loss but may be used in addition to these medications or may be an option for those who wish to not take medications or have side effects from these medications. PRP will complement the effects of minoxidil and DHT blockers. PRP hair restoration is also a great option for those who are not candidates for surgery or who want to delay formal hair transplant surgery. PRP can also be used after Neograft hair transplant to improve graft survival and speed of growth as well as to help prevent ongoing hair loss.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is the body’s natural healing elixir and acts as a natural fertilizer that stimulates stem cells to grow and repair aged and damaged tissue. Platelet-rich plasma(PRP) therapy can be a proactive treatment for patients experiencing thinning hair or as an adjunct to hair transplant procedures. PRP has been utilized for years as a way to stimulate growth of new cells in a variety of applications. PRP has recently received a great deal of press as it relates to treatments to restore youthful appearance to your skin. For example, Des Moines Plastic Surgery uses PRP with lasers and microneedling to expedite healing and for anti-aging and improvement in skin texture and tone.

A tummy tuck can address both the upper and lower abdomen. It’s important to note that tummy tuck surgery is not a substitute for conventional weight loss. The best candidates will already be in good health and physical shape before electing surgery.

The goal of tummy tuck surgery is to redefine and reshape the abdomen through the removal of excess skin and fat and tightening of abdomen muscles.

You may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty if you have:

Localized fat deposits around your midsection
Excess or hanging skin around your abdomen
Stretched or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)

A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals.

Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:

Aging
Heredity
Pregnancy
Prior surgery
Significant fluctuations in weight

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and restores weakened muscles to create a smoother, firmer abdominal profile.

Consultation: the first step.

Many women start their surgical journey by talking to a friend or a relative who has already had a breast augmentation. While these are all good places to start, your most valuable resource is a personal consultation with a plastic surgeon.

A consultation doesn’t take long, and with an expert’s opinion, you’ll be better able to understand the benefits, risks, and discover which implant options are best for you and your body.

What LOOK can Natrelle® implants give you?
Your surgeon can help you choose the best option based on your needs, wants, unique body structure, and more. Natrelle INSPIRA® Breast Implants are designed for a full look—especially at the top. Keep in mind that choosing the right implant for you is more than just deciding on size.

Should you request a certain bra size?

Believe it or not - no!

Surgeons talk size and projection when it comes to selecting implants. Breast implant size is actually measured in cubic centimeters (cc), not by bra cup size. The larger the implant, the higher the number of cc.

Projection refers to the side profile or the distance that the implant projects from your body.

The amount of volume (cc) and the degree of projection you and your surgeon select will depend on your body type and the shape and fullness you want.

What does GUMMY feel like?

All Natrelle INSPIRA Breast implants are soft, with varying levels of gel squishiness. When you go gummy, you don’t have to sacrifice implant softness. The best way to determine softness is to feel each implant during your consultation.

...

What does GUMMY mean?

Gummy describes the consistency of silicone gel in Natrelle INSPIRA Breast Implants.

This gummy-like gel sticks together and has a tendency to hold its shape.

Each implant in the INSPIRA collection has a different level of cohesivity, or what surgeons refer to as gumminess.
