Meet Dr. David Robbins - Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Robbins selected Des Moines because at the core of this community he found a mirror image of his own personal values. Values like honesty, integrity, respect, loyalty, friendship and being down to earth. “These characteristics are very important when choosing a plastic surgeon,” says Dr. Robbins, “and they are the foundation of my practice that the people of Des Moines and greater Iowa deserve and have come to expect.”
Dr. Robbins is Iowa’s ONLY quadruple board certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Robbins believes not only experience but education are important for a successful medical practice. He is board certified by:
- The American Board of Plastic Surgery
- The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
- The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery
- The American Board of Laser Surgery
Go to www.plasticsurgery.org or www.abfprs.org to learn more about board certification. It is important to understand what each board certification means and the validity of each of them. Not all plastic surgeons are board certified and not all plastic surgeons are board certified by the necessary boards that are relevant to their specialty or overall medical practice.
Dr. Robbins graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical center with a medical degree and continued at UNMC for his surgical training. He then completed plastic surgery training at the University of Kentucky.
Professional Society Memberships:
- American Society of Plastic Surgeons
- Fellow, American College of Surgeons
Why Board Certification Is Important
When selecting a plastic surgeon, it is essential that you confirm your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) under the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Dr. Robbins holds the distinction of being board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
In many states, a licensed physician may perform cosmetic procedures without being board-certified in plastic surgery. And just because a doctor is board-certified does not necessarily mean they are certified by the ABPS.
The ABPS is the only one of the 24 boards approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) that certifies physicians in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body. The ABMS was established to protect patients by monitoring and regulating the quality of medical education.
To be certified by the ABPS, a physician must meet these demanding requirements:
- GRADUATE FROM AN ACCREDITED MEDICAL SCHOOL
- COMPLETE A RESIDENCY IN GENERAL SURGERY
- COMPLETE AN APPROVED RESIDENCY IN PLASTIC SURGERY
- PASS A RIGOROUS PROCESS OF ORAL AND WRITTEN EXAMS AS WELL AS PEER EVALUATION
- PRACTICE PLASTIC SURGERY AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY FOR A MINIMUM OF FOUR YEARS
