Surgical Facial Rejuvenation Tailored
To Your Features For Lasting Results

A facelift at Des Moines Plastic Surgery can reverse the contour changes that develop over time, including loose skin, sagging cheeks, and loss of jawline and upper-neck definition. Performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Robbins in our fully accredited surgical suite in West Des Moines, a facelift becomes the right option when nonsurgical treatments are no longer enough. It restores smoother contours and a refreshed, younger look without changing the character of your face.

A facelift at Des Moines Plastic Surgery restores the contour and definition that creams, fillers, and skin tightening can no longer reach. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Robbins addresses sagging cheeks, deepening jawline lines, and loose neck skin through techniques chosen for your face, not a default template. The result looks rested, balanced, and unmistakably like you.

Resetting Your Facial Architecture with a Facelift

Most patients who reach a facelift consultation have already tried the nonsurgical route, often for years. Injectables, skin tightening devices, and topical care all work, until they stop delivering the change they used to. A facelift addresses what those treatments structurally cannot reach: the deeper SMAS layer that supports the cheeks, jawline, and upper neck. Performed in our AAAASF-accredited surgical suite in West Des Moines, the procedure resets the underlying architecture of the face rather than tightening the surface.

What a Facelift Can Improve

A surgical facelift can address:

  • Sagging skin along the cheeks, jawline, and neck
  • Deep wrinkles or facial folds
  • Jowls and loss of jawline definition
  • Loose or banded skin on the neck
  • Volume changes that make the face look tired or heavy

Using modern surgical techniques, Dr. Robbins customizes every facelift procedure to deliver results that are designed to look natural, balanced, and proportionate to your facial structure.

Benefits of Facelift Surgery

Patients choose facelift surgery for long-lasting improvements, such as:

  • A more defined jawline
  • Reduction of deep wrinkles and folds
  • A smoother, tighter neck
  • Improved facial harmony and contour
  • A refreshed look that feels like you, just younger

A facelift delivers a level of correction that nonsurgical treatments cannot match. For a full overview of other facial procedures, you can explore our facial plastic surgery procedures page.

Are You a Good Candidate for Facelift Surgery?

Most patients arrive at a facelift consultation already weighing whether they have reached the point where surgery will deliver more than continued filler. A good candidate is in generally good health, has reasonable skin elasticity, and is bothered by changes that nonsurgical care can no longer fully correct. The most natural fit is often someone who has used injectables for years and is starting to feel that adding more filler makes the face look heavier rather than younger. Active smokers and patients expecting the procedure to halt aging entirely are not strong candidates. Age matters less than tissue quality, facial anatomy, and the degree of correction needed.

Types of Facelift Procedures at Des Moines Plastic Surgery

Not every face ages the same way, so not every facelift looks the same. The right approach depends less on age and more on which parts of the face have actually changed. Each option below is built around a different combination of concern, scope, and downtime.

Facelift surgery is highly customizable. During your facelift consultation, Dr. Robbins will evaluate your facial anatomy and recommend the approach that matches your goals.

Full Facelift

A full facelift is the right choice when laxity has progressed across the cheeks, jawline, and neck together rather than in one isolated area. It is the most comprehensive surgical option and tends to suit patients with moderate to significant skin sagging, jowl development, and neck banding that all need correction in the same procedure. Incisions are placed in the hairline and behind the ears so they sit hidden once healed. The deeper SMAS layer is lifted and tightened, excess skin is removed, and the contour is reset. Recovery is the longest, but the change is the most complete and most long-lasting.

Lower Facelift

A lower facelift is the right call when the cheeks and midface still look balanced but the jaw has softened. It focuses on the jowls, jawline, and the bottom third of the cheeks rather than rebuilding the entire face. Because the surgical scope is narrower than a full lift, incisions are shorter and recovery is generally faster. The lower face often shows age-related changes before other areas, making this procedure a popular option for patients seeking targeted correction of jowls and jawline softening without addressing areas that are not yet a concern.

Mid Facelift

A mid facelift is selected when the concern sits higher on the face, in the cheek hollows and under the eyes, rather than along the jaw or neck. It restores volume and lift through the cheeks and upper face. Patients whose primary concern is flattening in the cheek area or a tired, hollowed appearance often choose this option while their jawline still holds its shape. Incisions are typically smaller and placed near the hairline or inside the lower eyelid. Because the work is concentrated in one zone, downtime is shorter than a full lift, with a refreshed but subtle result.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift suits patients with early jowl development or mild jawline softening who want a meaningful correction without committing to a full surgical lift. Most candidates are in their forties or early fifties, in good overall health, with skin that still holds reasonable elasticity. The procedure uses shorter incisions placed in front of the ear and sometimes extending into the hairline. The underlying SMAS tissue is tightened and lifted, and a smaller amount of excess skin is removed before closure. Recovery is meaningfully shorter than a full facelift. Most patients return to desk work within five to seven days, compared to seven to fourteen for the comprehensive procedure, with strenuous exercise resumed in about two to three weeks.

Neck Lift

A neck lift is chosen when the cheeks and jawline have aged well but the area beneath the chin no longer matches. It can be performed on its own or combined with another facial procedure when neck laxity, vertical muscle banding, or fullness under the chin are the primary concerns. Some patients have well maintained midface and cheeks but a neckline that has softened ahead of the rest of the face. In those cases, treating only the neck delivers the most natural outcome. When the lower face and neck have both changed, pairing the two procedures on the same day shortens total downtime and produces a more balanced profile.

Before, During, and After Facelift Surgery

Clear expectations make the entire process smoother. From the first consultation through your final follow-up, the team at Des Moines Plastic Surgery walks you through every step so you know what is coming, why, and when.

Before Your Facelift

Your facelift consultation with Dr. Robbins covers medical history, a skin and tissue evaluation, and a candid conversation about realistic outcomes. Pre-surgical instructions usually include pausing certain medications and supplements, avoiding nicotine, and arranging for a ride home, along with help during the first day or two. You will leave with written guidance, a clear cost estimate, and time to ask remaining questions.

During Your Facelift

Surgery is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia, with the right option discussed in advance. Most facelift procedures take two to four hours, depending on the scope. Incisions are placed in concealed areas, the deeper tissues are lifted, excess skin is removed, and closure is done carefully to preserve a natural hairline and ear contour.

After Your Facelift

Mild swelling and bruising peak in the first one to two weeks. Most patients return to desk work within seven to fourteen days and resume strenuous exercise after about three to four weeks. The team will see you back several times during early recovery. Final facelift results refine over the following months as the tissues fully settle into position.

FAQs ABOUT FACELIFT SURGERY IN DES MOINES

There is no fixed age. Most patients land between their late forties and mid sixties, but the right time depends on how your face has actually aged: when sagging skin, jowls, or neck laxity no longer respond to nonsurgical treatment, the conversation shifts to surgery.

A facelift focuses on the lower two-thirds of the face: the cheeks, jawline, and neck. It does not lift the forehead or smooth sagging eyelids.

If you’re concerned about these areas, many patients combine their facelift with:

These procedures may be performed alone or with a facelift for a balanced, full-face rejuvenation.

Patients not ready for surgery often start with nonsurgical options that address surface and mild laxity concerns. Injectables like Botox and dermal fillers, energy-based skin tightening, and laser resurfacing can all delay the need for a facelift. These treatments are offered through Coachlight Clinic & Spa, our sister medspa. A facelift becomes the better option once those treatments stop delivering the change they used to.

Expect swelling and bruising for the first one to two weeks. Most patients return to desk work within 7–14 days, depending on how their body heals.
You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions, and our team will see you regularly during the early recovery phase to ensure your healing progresses smoothly. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for about three to four weeks.

Most patients tolerate recovery very well. Though facelift surgery isn’t usually considered very painful, it’s common to experience some stiffness, bruising, and swelling. In order to keep you as comfortable as possible, Dr. Robbins will provide you with specific aftercare instructions along with oral pain medication.

Swelling and bruising may be significant and are typically most noticeable in the first two weeks. Work and social interaction may need to be limited during this time. Dr. Robbins and the staff at Des Moines Plastic Surgery™ will see facelift patients back numerous times during the first few weeks after surgery. Full recovery from swelling may take up to a month, and scars will fade over the next several months.

A facelift cannot stop the natural aging process, but the improvements are long-lasting. Many patients enjoy their results for 10 years or more. Your skin quality, lifestyle, and genetics all play a role in how long your rejuvenation lasts.

Pricing varies based on the type of facelift, whether other facial procedures are combined, and the complexity of your surgical plan.
During your facelift consultation, we’ll provide a detailed cost estimate along with available financing options.
