When To Consider Male Breast Reduction

If you’re self-conscious about size and shape of your chest, you may want to consider male breast reduction. Surgery is ideal for men who:

Are healthy and do not smoke
Have clear cosmetic goals
Have stabilized breast development
Are at or near their ideal body weight

As a general rule, surgery is not recommended for severely overweight men because the problem may correct itself through diet and exercise. Additionally, men who smoke marijuana or take anabolic steroids are not good candidates for surgery because these drugs can contribute to gynecomastia. Breast Reduction for Men Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of gynecomastia. However, certain drugs (marijuana and anabolic steroids), hormonal changes and weight fluctuations may increase the size of your chest. Genetic factors may also play a role in development.

Surgery will take place in Des Moines Plastic Surgery™’s own fully accredited in-office operating room. Male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure (you’ll be able to return home the same day as surgery) and requires general anesthesia. Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Robbins will remove excess skin, tissue, and fat. Incisions are typically made around the edge of the areola or within the armpits. In some cases, Dr. Robbins may also use liposuction to remove additional excess fat. At the conclusion of surgery, all incisions will be secured with sutures. Surgical drains may also be placed near the incision sites to collect excess fluid build-up. Male breast reduction is usually completed in 1-2 hours.

Swelling, bruising and discomfort are all common during the first several days. During this initial stage of recovery, you will need to take time off from work and other routines to recuperate. Most men feel up to resuming work and light physical activities within a week, but strenuous lifting and exercise should be avoided for approximately a month. The final results of your procedure will appear over the course of several months as your chest gradually heals and adjusts to its’ new position.

There will be visible scarring following surgery. Your scars will fade and flatten over the course of 12-18 months, but never completely disappear. However, most of our patients do not feel self-conscious about their scars and feel the trade-off is well worth it.

Male breast reduction carries many of the same risks of any surgical procedure including infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, changes in sensation, scarring and blood loss. Dr. Robbins will discuss these risks with you in-depth during your consultation.
